Do variable-speed pool pumps save money?

They can—because filtration often does not require one high speed all day. Your plumbing and equipment still decide the schedule.

One speed is rarely ideal for every job

Filtration, heating, vacuuming, spa operation, water features, and chlorination may require different flow rates. A single-speed pump must operate at its fixed speed even when a lower flow would complete the task.

Longer can still cost less

A variable-speed pump may run more hours at lower wattage. Compare total energy rather than runtime alone.

Measure the programmed schedule

The most useful comparison uses power at each programmed speed and the number of hours at that speed. If you only have one average wattage, the Utility Math calculator can still provide a reasonable planning estimate.

Flow requirements remain non-negotiable

Heaters, salt systems, cleaners, spas, and water features may need minimum flow. Plumbing arrangement, filter condition, elevation, and pipe size also matter. Savings do not justify a schedule that prevents equipment from operating correctly or maintaining water quality.

Use a simple payback: divide installed upgrade cost by estimated annual savings. Then consider remaining life of the old pump, warranty, rebates, noise, and expected ownership period.
